Soon was designed to cocoon a family that wanted to feel safe yet also live in the middle of the coastal city of La Barra. Therefore, the project had two requirements: to protect the family from the city but to remain open to the sea.
These two apparently contradictory concepts, protection and openness, are quite common in contemporary architecture, which tends to offer them both through the design of the building’s outer skin. In this case, the solution was shutters made of wooden slats to protect against sunlight and prying eyes, yet the shutters were designed to slide so that they can easily be opened and closed.
Inside the house, the usual design is inverted, with the private area located around the entryway and the communal areas in the open-concept upper storey in order to get better Views of the sea.
The attic was designed as yet another wood-clad room with steel banisters where the residents can enjoy the outdoors and especially watch the incredible sun setting behind the skyline of Punta del Este.
[:es]Soon se diseñó para proteger a una familia que quería sentirse segura y, a la vez, vivir en medio de la ciudad costera de La Barra. Por tanto, el proyecto se encontró con dos exigencias: protegerse de la ciudad y abrirse al mar.
Estos dos conceptos, protección y abertura, aparentemente contradictorios, son muy abundantes en la arquitectura contemporánea, acostumbrada a responder a ambos por medio del diseño de la piel del edificio. En este caso, se proponen unas contraventanas de lamas de madera como protecciones para controlar la luz solar y las miradas indiscretas,que al ser correderas, se pueden abrir y cerrar a voluntad.
El programa interior se invierte, situando la zona privada alrededor del hall de entrada y las áreas comunes en el espacio diáfano de la planta superior, con el fin de obtener las mejores vistas del mar.
El ático se diseñó como una habitación más de madera con barandillas de acero, para disfrutar del aire libre y, especialmente, para contemplar el increíble poniente detrás de la silueta edilicia de Punta del Este.
