Black and Red was designed based on the internal logic of family life. Therefore, the architectural form emerged from a programme that analysed how the space was occupied based on family ties.
The particular needs of the three different family members materialise into three independent volumes measuring 440 square metres, which incorporate the most private quarters:
- The parents’ privacy in the main suite.
- The family’s sustenance in the living room, kitchen and bathroom.
- The children’s recreation in the bedroom, playroom and bathroom, open to the huge veranda over the swimming pool.
The inhabitants of the house interact in a concrete veranda, which is the true heart of the home in terms of both architecture as it articulates all three volumes and the family, because it is the site of their communal activities—gathered around the fireplace and in the outdoor dining room.
The gallery is covered with circular skylights and clad in wood painted red and black. Together, these elements create an extraordinary interplay of colour: the spaces are flooded with light and shadow, which constantly changes depending on the distinctive qualities of the sunlight that strikes Punta del Este.
Black and Red is the embodiment of Le Corbusier’s definition of architecture as “the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light”.
[:es]Black and Red se diseñó desde la lógica interior: la convivencia familiar. Por tanto, la forma arquitectónica surge de un programa que analiza el modo de ocupar el espacio a partir de los vínculos de la familia.
Las tres necesidades particulares, según el miembro de la familia, se materializan en tres volúmenes independientes de 440 metros cuadrados que integran las actividades más privadas:
- intimidad de los progenitores en la suite principal;
- subsistencia de la familia en la sala de estar, la cocina y el aseo;
- recreo de los niños en la habitación, la sala de juegos y el toilette, todo abierto a la gran galería sobre la piscina.
Las relaciones entre los habitantes de la casa tienen lugar en una galería de hormigón que constituye el verdadero nexo de unión tanto arquitectónico, porque articula los tres volúmenes, como familiar, porque acoge las actividades de reunión alrededor de la chimenea y en el comedor exterior.
La galería está cubierta por lucernarios circulares y revestida con madera pintada de rojo y negro. Juntos, estos elementos crean un extraordinario juego de color: los espacios se inundan de luces y sombras, variables según las distintas versiones del sol que ofrece Punta del Este.
Black and Red responde a la definición de la arquitectura como «el juego sabio, correcto y magnífico de los volúmenes bajo la luz de Le Corbusier.
