Al Mare
2003
Punta del Este, Uruguay
Constructed Area:
380 m2
Al Mare seems like a part of the landscape on the coast of La Posta del Cangrejo. Its volumes project out perpendicular to the sea in response to a site that is bounded by side streets leading down to the beach. Therefore, its layout is not continuous—running parallel to the sea—but rather like a gradual approach as its spaces descend towards the water.
The bland volume is shaped with materials available in the environs: stone, wood and concrete integrate into the landscape and combine, in turn, with super-light prefabricated metallic structures. The natural setting renders additional ornamentation superfluous.
The design unfolds in 380 square metres divided into three rectangular storeys. The ground floor contains the daytime areas, such as the living room, kitchen and guest bathroom. The night-time area, with four bedroom suites, is located on the upper floor. Finally, a half-basement emerges in the downward slope of the land; it houses the service areas and garage.
The inside is filled with extremely subtle features, such as the treads on the cantilevered staircase attached to the wall, where the light from above enters obliquely, and handcrafted details that reject the sophisticated enticements of the large city.
